How To Get Dawnbreaker Skyrim And Obtain The Unique Sword

8 September 2026 | 14

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is packed with iconic Daedric artifacts, but few weapons shine as brightly as the legendary Dawnbreaker blade. This holy broadsword is specifically forged to destroy undead creatures, making it an invaluable tool for dungeon crawlers exploring crypts across the realm. Acquiring this weapon requires completing a specific quest tied to one of Tamriel's most vocal Daedric Princes.

Finding Meridia's Beacon and Starting the Quest

To begin your journey toward acquiring Dawnbreaker, you must first reach character level 12. Once you reach this milestone, searching randomly generated loot chests in dungeons or bandit camps will eventually reveal a strange crystal known as Meridia's Beacon. Picking up this object immediately triggers the voice of Meridia, who instructs you to bring the beacon back to her shrine near Solitude.

If you prefer not to rely on randomized chest spawns, you can travel directly to the Statue to Meridia located west of Solitude. Interacting with the massive monument places a quest marker on your map directing you to the location of the missing beacon. Returning the gemstone to the pedestal at the base of the shrine officially initiates the quest titled The Break of Dawn.

Navigating the Mount Kilkreath Temple

Upon placing the beacon on Meridia's shrine, a beam of light will guide you into the subterranean ruins of Kilkreath Temple. Your primary task inside this dungeon is to guide Meridia's purifying light through a series of optical focal points. You must interact with various pedestals throughout the corridors to redirect the light beams toward locked doors.

As you navigate the dark hallways, prepare to fight waves of shade spirits that haunt the ancient temple. These corrupted shadows deal elemental damage and can quickly overwhelm unprepared players in narrow passages. Keeping healing potions or restoration magic ready will help you survive these intense encounters while progressing deeper into the shrine.

Defeating Malkoran and Claiming Dawnbreaker

In the final chamber of Kilkreath Temple, you will face Malkoran, a powerful necromancer who has desecrated Meridia's holy grounds. Malkoran uses high-tier frost spells that deal severe area-of-effect damage to incoming adventurers. After defeating his physical form, his lingering shade will immediately spawn, requiring a second round of combat.

Once both forms of the necromancer are vanquished, you can approach the central altar where the sword rests. Make sure to search the surrounding room and collect all valuable loot before pulling the weapon from its pedestal. Activating the sword automatically completes the quest and teleports you high into the sky to receive Meridia's final blessing.

Unlocking the Full Power of the Daedric Artifact

Dawnbreaker possesses a unique fire enchantment that burns targets for additional damage upon impact. When striking undead foes such as Draugr or vampires, the sword has a chance to trigger a massive area-of-effect explosion. This blast instantly incinerates weaker targets and forces surviving undead enemies to flee in terror.

You can further enhance the blade's effectiveness by upgrading it at any blacksmithing grindstone using an Ebony Ingot. Players with perks in the Restoration and Destruction skill trees will also passively boost the fiery power of its holy blasts. With proper maintenance and character perks, Dawnbreaker remains one of the most effective weapons in all of Skyrim.
